THE HISTORY OF THE GGLC
- 07/09/74 The formation of the Cheltenham-Gloucester Campaign For Homosexual Equality (CHE) Group.
- 19/07/76 The Group achieved publicity when a talk was given to them by the Bishop Of Gloucester, The Right
Reverend John Yates.
- 08/77 The first Barge Semington disco was held.
- 01/02/79 The first weekly meeting was held in the Old Crypt Schoolroom, Gloucester
- 12/79 The first Constitutional Committee were elected.
- 20/12/79 The CHE Group address becomes PO Box 23, Gloucester.
- 06/11/80 The first Annual Dinner was held at the Old Crypt Schoolroom.
- 12/11/81 The creation of the Gloucester Gay Community Development Fund was announced at the Annual Dinner.
This was opened with an initial deposit of £100.
- 12/06/82 The first disco was held at Cheltenham Racecourse.
- 01/11/82 The Gloucester-Cheltenham CHE became the Gloucestershire Gay Community (GGC).
- 25/11/82 The GGC made its first appearance on local radio (Severn Sound) in a discussion about gay men,
lesbians and employment.
- 08/84 The tenth anniversary was celebrated. The Development Fund topped £2,000.
- 13/10/90 The Colin Garfield Memorial Trophy was awarded to the “Person of the year” for the first time.
- 07/92 The GGC acquired its first word processor.
- 02/93 Gloucestershire Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Forum was set up. The Forum is a partnership between Health Promotion
Gloucestershire, Gay And Lesbian ‘Friend’ Helpline (Gloucestershire), Gloucestershire Gay And Lesbian
Community, the local Genito-urinary medicine clinics, the HIV Counselling, Support And Antibody Testing
Service and the local gay venues.
- 18/03/93 A new Constitution was agreed.
- 21/10/93 The first meeting of the Gloucestershire HIV Liaison Group. The Liaison Group is a partnership
between voluntary and statutory agencies.
- 05/94 The first Gloucestershire Gay Men’s HIV/AIDS Forum newsletter was produced.
- 13/08/94 The GGC celebrated its twentieth anniversary.
- 08/95 The telephone line was launched.
- 04/96 The Development Fund reached £10,000.
- 10/96 The GGC bought its first computer.
- 10/97 The name was changed to Gloucestershire Gay And Lesbian Community (GGLC) and a new Constitution was
adopted. This Constitution better defines members rights and responsibilities.
- 05/02/98 The first meeting at Gloucester Centre For Voluntary Services took place.
- 27/07/98 The first GGLC website was launched.
- 07/09/2004 The group is 30 years old.
- 30/10/2004 The GGLC celebrates it's 30th anniversery at it's Annual Dinner.
- 12/08/2006 The group attends the first Gloucester Rainbow Day
- 27/10/2007 Peter Tatchell attends the GGLC Annual Dinner
