The Winter Season 2006
The seasonal events have been as varied as usual and the slightly warmer winters tend to
bring out our members.
January began with a Christmas News Quiz and it was obvious that our chaps keep an eye on
what is happening both locally and far away—despite the hectic rush to get everything
ready for the big days!
It was like Christmas all over again at the wrapped auction. Just like at home, it proves
to be just as much fun seeing what others get. We had lots of laughs and the presents were
varied and imaginative.
Kevin L. came to talk to us about Gay Issues from the equalities team on Gloucester County
Council. It is good to know that Kevin and his colleagues are constantly on the look out
for discrimination.
Cheltenham’s Town Crier Ken B. proved a big hit with his audience. Robed and ringing his
bell he kept us entertained and informed—a larger than life character indeed! We gave Ken
a donation towards his costs.
My 60’s quiz proved too easy for some, but it gave an opportunity for we older ones to
discuss and remember the past, and also to teach our more youthful members a thing or two!
As usual, Michael CH (and Alan) planned an enjoyable Valantines evening for us. We used the
materials provided to make some romantic card or expression of our love. It was hilarious
trying to pass a spoon on a ribbon through the various garments we were wearing.
The evening was a good laugh—good ideas! Thanks for that.
Ken L. made some delicious pancakes, as he does every year. They were yummy and some had
two, or even three! Ken is a whizz with the electric frying pans—what a treat!
The committee asked Allan and Bill if they could bring the plant sale forward. This they
did, and it was interesting to see the different plants available at this time of the year.
The snowdrops were especially popular and money was raised for group funds. Thank you
Bill and Allan, and also Ken and Ray.
We watched a film about the City of Gloucester on March 8th. Despite a few gremlins it
proved to be informative and entertaining and we look forward to two further films about our
local area.
Coffee and chats are enjoyed as usual and we tend to have the monthly raffle on those
evenings. Are the number of prizes going down a bit or am I imagining it? Dont forget
they can be a big source of group revenue!
As I write, we have two more events in March, including a game and a visit.
Keep the ideas coming!
John (Social Secretary)
