Summer? What Summer? I think we were diddled!
A few weeks ago I met someone who used to come to the Group. He said he didn't come anymore because it was "boring". I wish I had answered, Well, not once did you come up with an idea for Thursdays!. So, don't leave it all to myself and the committee, all ideas are gratefully received. However, it is very encouraging to see such numbers attending and generally taking a full part in what we are doing. The future for the Group looks bright!
The Summer calendar kicked off with Barrie G's tour of Gloucester. It is always good to get out and we learnt a lot. Thanks to Mark for organising that. Barrie is new to guiding, but he did it very well. Isn't the Cathedral magnificent? Remember who built it?
Alex didn't turn up to tell us what Art is, so I put on a variation of a beetle drive. I think we agreed that it is more fun when we move around according to scores, which we didn't do that night.
The Pot Luck Quiz was a different format from our usual quizzes, and my intention was to enable different people to excel. It worked! Some mention must be made of John from the Forest, who knows his stuff. I think any team will be glad to have him in future. Someone said the questions were more difficult than per usual. (Anyone remember the quizzes I used to do? The Editor)
Mike and Rob put on a bingo session and thanks boys for that. They were very generous with the prizes, how come I never win!
We unanimously agreed that Martin Horwood made a great impact when he visited us. If anyone does not know who he is he is the Lib Dem M.P. for Cheltenham. It was good that he was of particular help to one of our members with a problem. Martin, you can come back any time!
I usually M.C. the music evening, but this time Ken the Rave stepped back into his disco shoes and excelled himself with his banter. We had a good choice of music to listen to and more people contributed this time. I have asked Ken to put together a 60s and 70s theme night.
The high spot of the period was, I think, when Rosie G. came to beautify is with her tips and techniques. Mark valiantly agreed to climb onto the bed and have the works. The results? Well, you always look good Mark! This went down well, I feel.
Last Thursday Ken provided a film for us which most certainly was much more popular than the infamous "Nuts in May"! What an adventure and it was great to go on a tour down Route 66. Isn't U.S. signage ugly?
There could be a problem with next week's talk on Wills. Only time will tell. (It was cancelled, The Editor)
Coffee and Chats are usually enjoyed but non-eventful. We could not say the same about August 28th when Nominations for the Person of the Year were discussed. This opened a big can of worms as to how the person or persons should be chosen and the resulting 'debate' took up the whole session. Members might like to know that 24 nominations for seven individuals or organisations were received.
I don't mind giving the notices, but Michael CH, you do it so much better just one of the reasons we are glad to see you back with us!
